Study opportunities

1st degree of academic study - Bachelor's course (Bc.)

Air Transport - 3 years

This course is mostly technically oriented. The graduate is able to analyse problems and possibilities in operation processes, mainly in the field of civil aviation, air transport and its components. The course is designed to cover a wide range of operational issues in aviation. Starting off with common theoretical subjects (mathematics, physics, informatics, general theory of economics, marketing), students gradually gain knowledge in specialised subjects (operation and economics of air transport, air navigation, meteorology, aerodynamics, aeromechanics, radio navigation aids, flight planning and monitoring) and in subjects which can enhance their professional career in technical ways (avionics, aircraft propulsion, aircraft construction) or economic ways (air transport business and operations, economics of aircraft operator, business communication and presentation skills). The study is accomplished by presenting and defending a Bachelor thesis and passing the final state exam.

Professional Pilot - 3 years

Students of the Professional Pilot Bachelor´s course accomplish theoretical and practical training with the goal of achieving an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). As for the scope and subjects, this course is designed similar to the Air Transport Bachelor`s course. In addition, students take ground school up to the level of the required knowledge for ATPL frozen. Practical training is designed in accordance with JAR-FCL requirements. It is provided as an integrated - ab initio course or modular course to the level of Commercial Pilot License with multi-engine and instrument ratings (CPL/MEP/IR). This training is provided in the form of a self-funded pilot course by the University of Žilina Flight Training Organisation (FTO) which is closely inked with the Air Transport Department. The FTO is fully certified by the CAA of the Slovak Republic and is the only FTO in Slovakia providing both ground school and practical training under one roof. The FTO operates 22 aircraft in total. The FTO also owns and operates JEPPESSEN 200 simulators for IFR training, navigation procedures and phraseology and a FNPT II MCC Trainer. The course is completed upon presentation and successful defence of a Bachelor thesis and by passing the final state exam.

2nd degree of academic study - Air Transport Engineering course (Dipl. Ing. - equivalent to MSc. degree)

Air transport

Students of the Air Transport Engineering course are prepared mainly in operational, technical and economic disciplines focused on specialised managerial positions in civil aviation. Completing the study qualifies the graduates for positions in enterprises, organisations and governmental bodies in civil aviation, i.e. airlines, airports, air navigation service providers (ANSPs), aviation authorities, maintenance and handling companies, research establishments etc. Graduates are familiar with processes in air traffic control; operations, aircraft maintenance and overhaul; airport operation; economics and business activities of air transport enterprises etc. The engineering study programme is provided in either a full-time (2 years) or part-time (2 years) form. The scope of the study programme is designed to cover the whole area of air transport operations. Subjects enable the students to profile their professional career in the field of operation, both technically (applied mathematics, human performance, air traffic management, airport design and operation, crises management, airline company operation) and economically (operational and business activities in aviation, airline marketing and management, economics of aviation enterprise, etc.). The study ends with a final state exam and a defence of diploma thesis.

Technológia údržby lietadiel

The graduate is able to provide comprehensive knowledge of aircraft maintenance techniques based on knowledge of technical, operational and practical requirements of air transport. At the same time, the graduate will use the practical information obtained during the study to streamline the operation of transport and management processes in transport. The graduate can find a job in the air forces of Slovak Army, security, civil defence and rescue services. The graduate is able to work independently in the field of research and development with a high degree of creativity at the international level. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge that will enable easier adaptation and further professional growth of the graduate in the future, as well as on the acquisition of knowledge in the field of air traffic, which allows the graduate to apply quickly in practice. For example, in the management of multinational teams in the field of civil aviation, independent project management and taking responsibility for complex solutions. The graduate is able to use sophisticated technical approaches in solving problems, and during the study will gain experience in the formulation of hypotheses and analysis of data obtained. The study is completed by a state exam, which consists of the elaboration and defence of a diploma thesis.

3rd degree of academic study - Postgraduate doctoral study

The doctoral study enables graduates to go through specialised scientific development in the field of Transport and Communications Technology and Branch and Cross-Section Economics in specialisation for: Economics of Transport and Communications. The Air Transport Department offers topics for dissertation theses in accordance with its research orientation and currently solved research tasks.
